This photo shows, unfortunately, what public health is becoming in the United States. As a general public, we lack either the education and/or the desire to make smart, nutritional decisions when it comes to food. We eat too much fast food without thinking of the negative consequences, and, for this reason, obesity is rising rapidly. Through Public Health, we can educate the public and convince them to make healthier decisions in food choices and exercise, rather than wait until McDonald's opens at 5am like these two ladies. As a society, we can all make healthier decisions and avoid negative effects of being unhealthy.

This is Public Health

I'm Evelyn Ponce, this is what I thought of when I thought about what I felt Public Health meant; providing people with easy and safe ways to exercise, walk to school or just go on a leisurely walk. This bridge is the only thing that makes it possible for people at this point to go from one side of Provo river to the other.

This is Public Health!
I am an avid believer in breast feeding. Not only are there ample benefits to the mother for breast feeding her children, such as lower risks of ovarian cancer, the benefits are passed on to the breast-fed child. Children who were not breast fed are not only at much higher rates of contracting various diseases such as diabetes or Crohn's Disease, but are susceptible to poor oral health and reoccurring dental caries.
There are numerous benefits of breast feeding, however, one in particular is the amazing connection it gives a mother to her child. It truly is a blessing given to families to be able to provide for their children in such a beautiful way.

All to often we limit our view of public health to physical health. However health is includes our mental, spiritual, and emotional well being in addition to our physicality. This picture shows a variety of stress relievers. Stress is a high risk factor for multiple chronic diseases including heart attack and stroke. Sleep helps to rejuvenate through increasing our serotonin levels and decreasing cortisol. Laughter and relaxation are also helpful stress relievers. The scriptures and church in general serves as a support system through which we can find comfort. Support systems are also helpful stress relievers. Our mental state usually manifests itself through our physical well being and managing our mental state is essential to increasing our functionality and quality of life.

A BPA Free water bottle promotes a hydrated, active, and clean life-style for me. This water bottle allows me to always have fresh, clean, and cool water to drink (as long as I fill up!). When I drink out of my water bottle in front of other people, it reminds them to stay hydrated and drink water. No one puts soda in a WATER bottle.

This is Public Health!
This is Public Health in a very obvious, but profound way. We all have to get to class somehow if we live off campus, and bikes are the perfect way to go! They are affordable and a great exercise tool! Some diet experts say that biking is a better way to lose weight than running. Biking everyday to class has helped with my asthma and adapting to the high altitude! Unfortunately, the paper towels below the bike are not Public Health. Let's remember to clean up our community always! Because a healthy individual can lead to a healthy community.

THIS is Public Health

Public health to me is about education and prevention. This includes teaching healthy habits like brushing your teeth and promoting healthy choices and opportunities from a very early age. The second picture is an example of my 4 year old cousin who is already planning her future as a doctor. She loves to role play with her baby doll, taking care of her and advising her how to have a "healthy heart."
This is the FUTURE of Public Health.
~Callie Thackeray
Mark 7:2-4; And when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen hands, they found fault. For the pharisees and all the Jews except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
I think it is interesting how even back then, it was considered unholy and wrong if they did not wash their hands and food before eating. I am grateful for modern revelation and how they have taught us the importance of clean hands and food. I feel like clean food and hands is a big part of public health and the Temple is by far the purest and cleanest place that we can find!

this is public health
A large part of public health includes both protection and prevention. As for the Utah vs. BYU game tonight, our campus took the liberty of protecting statues around campus from our opponents. This is public health because students worked together to rise up against the unfavorable in hopes of a better tomorrow (or in this case, score against the Utes) with syran wrap. By taking the necessary measures to protect ourselves as a society (and university) against potentially harmful aspects of the world around us, we demonstrate public health.

THIS IS PUBLIC HEALTH
What is the universal "first thought" when it comes to getting healthy? Either diet, or exercise, in the form of RUNNING. Good running shoes are important, as comfort is an important factor in maintaining the desire/motivation to continue the exercise. So whether you associate this sticker with the shoe, or with the activity, THIS IS PUBLIC HEALTH!

One reason public health still exists is due to those in the field's awareness of the need for adaptability of the definition overtime. To me, my sixteen year old brother with his laptop on, headphones in, texting his girlfriend is the definition of public health as it expands and changes with each generation. (Plus he thinks the sticker is a pretty cool asset to his computer.)

This Is Public Health!

Awareness and education are two of the most important parts of Public Health.Cures and preventions would be pointless if never conveyed to the public. Missionaries are great examples of community members well educated in the benefits of Public Health who return their knowledge to help bless others!
